The Maheno Shipwreck was originally built in 1905 as a luxury ocean liner, sailing between New Zealand and Australia. During World War I, it was converted into a hospital ship, playing a vital role in transporting wounded soldiers to safety. After its wartime service, the Maheno was retired in the 1930s and sold for scrap. In 1935, while being towed to Japan, the ship was caught in a powerful cyclone, which caused it to run aground on K'gari's 75 Mile Beach.

Today, the wreck remains stranded on the shore and is a popular tourist attraction on K'gari's east coast!
