Explore the rugged beauty of K'gari on an epic 4WDing adventure!

From pristine beaches to lush rainforests and vast sand dunes, experience the island's natural beauty like never before. Whether you're an experienced off-roader or a first-time explorer, here's everything you need to know to prepare for the perfect 4WDing experience on the world's largest sand island.

A vehicle access permit must be obtained before driving on K'gari (formerly Fraser Island). These can be purchased online here.

All vehicles must be registered and have a valid permit. You must be able to produce a copy of your permit (including a digital copy on a phone or tablet) for inspection if requested by an authorised officer.

Vehicles without a valid access permit will be fined according to Queensland Government laws.

SeaLink K'gari (Fraser Island) ferries are currently operating daily ferry services between River Heads, Kingfisher Bay Resort and Wanggoolba Creek. Visit the Sealink K'gari website to book your return vehicle ferry transfers to the island.

Before heading out on your 4WD adventure, it's essential to check the current conditions and tides on K'gari. Weather, beach and track conditions can change quickly, and being prepared will help ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

Keep an eye on local forecasts, road and track updates, and any seasonal closures or warnings. Also, don't forget to check the latest tide times here (check out Waddy Point for tides on 75-Mile Beach and Urangan for tides on the west coast). Staying informed about tide schedules is crucial for planning your itinerary and ensuring you make the most of your time driving on the beach!

Ensure your vehicle is topped up with fuel prior to arriving on K'gari to avoid any surprises during your trip. If you need a top-up during your trip, there is a fuel station available at K'gari Beach Resort.

Additionally, always pack essential recovery gear to prepare for any unforeseen situations. This should include a sturdy recovery strap, a shovel, a high-lift jack, a portable air compressor, a tyre repair kit, and a first aid kit. These items will help you recover quickly if you get stuck or encounter any issues.

Lower Your Tyres: Reducing your tyre pressure (usually to around 18-20 PSI) helps increase traction on sand and prevents getting stuck. Be sure to re-inflate them once you're back on sealed roads.

Drive with Caution: Always drive at a steady, moderate pace, especially on soft sand. Avoid sudden acceleration, sharp turns, or braking, as it can cause you to get bogged down.

Stick to Designated Tracks: Stay on established tracks to avoid damaging the environment and getting lost. Respect local signage and follow the recommended routes for safer navigation.

Keep Your Distance: Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, especially when driving along the beach, as tides and sand conditions can change quickly.

Watch Out for Planes: Look out and give way to any small planes that may be taking off or landing on 75 Mile Beach. It's not only a designated highway, but a runway as well!

Stay Calm If You Get Stuck: If you find yourself bogged down, stay calm. Engage your recovery gear or call K'gari Offroad Recovery for assistance—don’t try to power through and risk causing further damage.

Pack Essentials: Ensure you bring plenty of water, food, sunscreen, and a first aid kit. Also, carry a fully charged phone and portable charger in case you need help.

Respect the Environment: K'gari is a pristine, protected environment. Stick to tracks, avoid disturbing wildlife, and leave no trace to help preserve the island’s natural beauty for generations to come.

Stuck in a rut on K'gari? Don't worry—K'gari Offroad Recovery is here to help! Whether you’ve found yourself bogged in the sand or facing another off-road challenge, their expert towing service is ready to assist.
